Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My Yepp Player Crashed! Its stuck on, or it will no longer turn on or it turns off as soon as it turns on.

A: If its turning off as soon as it turns on you may want to make sure the Encoding switch is in the 'Off' position and to make sure no 'Hold' buttons or other buttons are either 'On' or pressed down for some reason.

If none of those apply then your best bet is to first try taking the battery out and leaving your player out for a few minutes at least to see if that will somehow reset whatever is causing the problem. I've found that this works great to fix all my problems, even if the computer doesn't detect the Yepp and it won't turn on. Replace the battery and try to see if things work as they should now.

If that didn't help and your Yepp Player still won't respond, then take the battery out again and hook it up to the computer and then try Formatting it with the appropriate software. If that doesn't help then try Re-installing/installing the latest Firmware. Lastly, if you are still having problems then you should downgrade your firmware to the original version that came with your player. If you still have problems then calling Tech Support is your best bet - the Number for it in the area where you purchased your Yepp Player should be on the back of your manual.

Q: How do I get my files to play in a certain order?

A: Rename the files so they are numbered yourself. Because of the software on the yepp you should be sure to make it so the first 5 characters (or less) specify the file number. ie. 001_Song1.mp3.

Sometimes you will have files that specify their number too far into the name for the YP-55 to see it (ie. The_Best_Song_Out_There_01.mp3). The best way to fix these would be to use the free program called "Siren"

%N%b.mp3 is a good setting to try, and will move that number code to the front of the file and leave the rest of the name alone (ie. 001The_Best_Song_Out_There_01.mp3).

It may be a bit complex at first, but it's a very versitle program that can handle hundreds of these renames at a time, saving you lots of time and energy.

Q: My MP3s are too loud (or too soft) can I do anything so I can hear them better on my Yepp?

A: Get the free program called "MP3Gain"

This program can be used to change the actual volume of MP3 files without adversely affecting the quality in any way and its relatively fast. For me, 100 db is a good setting that I can hear on a noisy subway at Yepp Volume Level 30 or in a quiet room at home at Level 12.

Q: My files are way too big, I can't seem to fit anything on my player, is there anything I can do to get more stuff on it?

A: Get the free program called "CDex" and use the MP3 Re-encode Compressed Audio Files function to reduce the bit rates on your files.

Sometimes a file thats at 256 kbps sounds almost exactly the same at 64 kbps - thats means you can store 4x as much stuff on your player if you reduce the bitrates from 256 kbps to 64 kbps, it can definately be worth it if you need more space.

Q: How do I install new firmware for my YP-55?

A: This really depends on the version of firmware you are installing. If you are installing version 7.100 then please check out my 7.100 Firmware Page for the details. For older versions the manual is your best bet for this information.

Q: How do I format my YP-55?

A: This also depends on the version of firmware you are installing. To format your 7.100 Upgraded YP-55 just use the standard Windows format utility - it can now be safely formatted to FAT32. For older versions the manual is your best bet for this information.

Q: How can I reset my YP-55's Radio Station Preset List?

Though this feature was fixed somewhat in 6.000 allowing for new stations to be added after the one you are listening to, rather than starting the count from 1 each time you loaded FM Mode. There is still no way to delete a radio station from the list, however. The only way to reset it is to delete your "SETTINGS.DAT" file from the main Yepp directory. The next time you start up the player all your settings will have been erased but a new SETTINGS.DAT file will have been created. It will still, however, contain the default 4-6 FM Radio Station Presets.

Q: Can I edit the Lyrics displayed in Lyric Mode myself?

A: No, you can only use the Lyrics provided with the software. There may be newer versions of the database provided with the Lyrics software than the one listed in the Download Section of my site. If you find one, please post it in our forum.

Q: Should I upgrade my player to the latest firmware? Is it officially from Samsung? Is it safe?

A: This question is tricky and simple in its own ways. Yes, upgrading your player is a good idea if you want the new features but as with all upgrades it does entail some risk. It is easier to see information though and understand the program with an English site than it is with the foreign language sites where most YP-55 info is to be found. And you can find out if others have used it successfully before you to make sure it has a chance of working. All the programs listed on my site work on my YP-55V/XAC MP3 Player.

Some of these firmware updates are official and some may or may not be. Its hard to understand because they are on foreign language sites, but so far all seem to have been in English and some were listed on the Samsung site before the firmware upgrades section was removed some months ago. It is worth noting, however, that the Warranty that comes with the yepp' players has a section in it, which to me at least, seems to say that if you use any firmware upgrade, official or not, then your Warranty is Voided. But if you install the upgrades properly you should be fine.

About safety, I personally only install an upgrade if I know at least one person whom I can converse fluently with who has it up and working fine. Once that happens I know I have someone at least to ask or get help from if something does go wrong. So far I have no major problems at all with my yepp' when I have been using it properly (ie. when I'm not dropping it or dunking it in water - both of which I have done...).

Q: Having Trouble Installing New Firmware?

A: There is a known issue of some computers somehow resetting out of 'Recovery Mode' when there is an attempt to install new firmware. One thing to try is to unplug all USB cables and devices from your PC and reboot and then re-hook up your Yepp and try to upgrade it again.

Q: Sleep Mode doesn't seem to work for me, what's wrong?

A: Sleep mode doesn't actually save after you shut down the player, so each time you have to go through all the menus to start it up again. It also does not shut down the player if it is in FM Mode (reportedly).
